The fourth column we will not squeeze into a table
Used or remanufactured contract furniture — Steelcase, Herman Miller, and peers — is often the best sit, especially if you know your size. Dealers and refurbishers are a different expertise. We are not that dealer. If you have one locally, use them. Our default does not compete with a Leap you can try in a warehouse; it competes with “I was going to click Add to Cart on a racing chair.”
IKEA, briefly
IKEA is a real third path: cheap, available, mixed durability, you do the hex keys. Markus and its successors have been a rite of passage. A desk from IKEA plus a better chair is a known pattern. We do not have an IKEA affiliate program on this property. Mention is editorial.
How we would actually decide
- Need it today → store floor. Sit, check seat depth, buy the less ugly one with a return.
- Can wait, want new with a documented warranty → Branch is our D2C default. Read the live fit range.
- Can hunt used and want the best mechanism → contract refurbisher. Ignore our CTA.
- Only have marketplace money and refuse used → understand you are buying a short-life chair. Set a reminder to replace it before the cylinder feels interesting.
